Ethanol making food prices rise

By admin | Jan 30, 2008

ethanol A report that came out last week by  Earth Policy Institute. suggests that the boom in Ethanol will most likey drive up the food prices in the U.S. and quite possibly affect third world countries in the form of starvation and malnutrition because of the shift in grain prices and uses.

If Ethanol hits its expected stried, the world grain consumption will easily exceed production. Supposedly during this period, hunger and starvation should be declining in the world but it isnt. With the U.S.’s recent interest in cutting its dependency on foreign oil through the U.S. of Ethanol, it is expected that the current numbers of 800 million people living in hunger will increase to 1.2 billion by 2025.

This will help some countries that rely on exports of certain crops that will be used in biofuel production and hurt countries that rely  on the imports of those crops to feed their people.

Already there are many enhanol plants that are either in construction or already working in states like Iowa, Illinois, North Dakota, and South Dakota and millions of dollars have been invested.

Ethanol will not be the cure for the energy problem all by itself.  t is a quick fix that the agriculture lobbyists are trying to push for their own agenda. Common sense says that with the available land in the U.S. that we are not going to be able to supply food and the energy needs of the U.S.
