World Biggest Biomass Plant in Wales

By admin | Jan 22, 2008

The EU could very well take the lead in biomass production with the creation of the worlds largest biomass production facility in Wales.
Solid biomass has been the cause of the steady increase of energy production in Europe. In 2006, 62.4 million ton of oil equivalent was produced. That is an increase of 5.3% from 2005. Biomass currently accounts for about 4% of the total production of the EU, but the EU Biomass Action Plan is trying to double that production number by 2010.

The woodchip fueled energy plant in Port Talbot Wales, will generate about 350MW, or enough power to fuel half the households in Wales when it starts production in 2010.

There isn’t a large woodchip industry in the u.k. and 2.5 to 3 million tons of clean wood chip will be needed to power the plant. U.S., Canada, and some Baltic countries are planned to be used for sources for wood chips.
